Travel Considerations

RE:BORDER 2025

San Diego State University is excited for this year’s Re:Border Conference, which will be held Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025 in Mexicali, Mexico on the main campus of our long-time partner Universidad Autónoma de Baja California.

As we have shared in recent months, SDSU students, faculty and staff should evaluate carefully the risks of crossing the border in today’s immigration enforcement climate.

Current California State University System (CSU) International Travel Considerations urges all members of the CSU community to “proceed with extreme caution” when considering international travel at this time.

Immigration policy and enforcement are constantly shifting, according to the CSU advisory. While the decision to cross into Mexico is a personal choice, it is important to understand that irregularities in travel documents, unconventional residency or naturalization status, or past contact with law enforcement are among the things that could significantly delay or deny re-entry into the United States.

Re:Border attendees should examine their personal risk of being flagged for a secondary inspection and proactively avoid being put in that situation.  These more thorough checks can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the complexity of the case and how busy the port of entry is at any given time.

International students holding an F-1 or J-1 visa should review and follow the processes provided by the International Student Center. The Travel and Re-entry webpage contains the most up-to-date information, including which documents and forms you must have signed for re-entry. Ensuring all documents required are on hand when traveling is the responsibility of the student.

SDSU and UABC want those attending Re:Border to have a rich, fulfilling, and safe experience. Please review the CSU International Travel Considerations before registering for the in-person conference.
